The Austin Papers

The Austin Papers comprises letters, receipts, contracts, etc. of Moses and Stephen F. Austin relating to the Austin enterprises before 1821 and, of course, the Texas venture.

The publication history of The Austin Papers may lead to confusion among those unfamiliar with the books. It is a three volume set in four books, so the fourth book is correctly labeled “Volume III” here. Your eyes do not deceive you.

The books are arranged chronologically, as follows:

  • Volume I, Part One: Genealogical record and correspondence 1789-1824.

  • Volume I, Part Two: Correspondence 1825-1827.

  • Volume II: Correspondence 1828-1834.

  • Volume III: Correspondence October 1834-1837.

SEARCH TIPS:

1) Documents in English and Spanish appear in this collection. Search in both. Example: A search for “slavery” might be followed by a search for “esclavitud” and/or “esclavos” to get you more comprehensive search results.

2) Always try alternate or phonetic spellings when you search. For example, for “Zavala,” also try “Zavalla.” For “Coleto,” try “Colleto” and “Coletto.” For “Burleson” try “Barlison,” too.
