The Papers of Mirabeau B. Lamar
Mirabeau B. Lamar is most well known as the second president of the Republic of Texas and as a poet (a mediocre one in this editor’s estimation). He is less well known as a historical researcher. Though he never authored a history book, throughout his life he collected historical data and made copious notes. Fifty years after Lamar’s death, the State of Texas purchased his papers. This cache consisted of nearly 3,000 letters, documents and manuscripts. It included correspondence as well as Lamar’s historical research archive.
The Papers of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar were transcribed and edited throughout the 1920s, and were published in six volumes from 1921 to 1927. The originals were issued in paper wraps so the discoloration and wrinkling you see on the covers here reflect that. Volume V is an exception in this project. Unable to locate an original copy, we digitized a 1968 Pemberton Press facsimile, and that’s reflected in the citation info.
